B2B research and opportunity discovery

Patterson Global

Find the companies worth your time.

Finding businesses to contact is easy.

Working out which ones are actually worth approaching takes more work.

Patterson Global researches potential customers, identifies the people who matter and looks for real reasons an opportunity deserves your attention.

Initially focused on IT support and managed IT businesses.

The problem

A long list doesn't tell you who is worth calling.

Most businesses can find thousands of company names through databases, LinkedIn or Google.

The harder questions come afterwards.

01

Does this company actually fit?

02

Has something changed that gives you a reason to approach them?

03

Who should you speak to?

04

Is there already a good reason not to waste your time?

That is where Patterson Global focuses its research.

Sample work

See what the research actually looks like.

The aim isn't to produce the biggest list. It's to work out which companies deserve a closer look and which ones don't.

Research note 01

Example: Regional professional services firm

Public-source review

What caught our attention

The business recently opened an additional office and recruited around the expansion.

Who appears relevant

  • Operations Director
  • Managing Partner

Why it could be worth investigating

Adding another location can create practical questions around connectivity, communications, secure access, endpoint management and ongoing support across multiple sites.

What was checked

Public sources were reviewed for company size, recent business changes, relevant decision-makers, internal technology capability and obvious supplier relationships.

Decision

PURSUE

Enough evidence to justify further research and a considered approach. No claim that the company is ready to buy.

PURSUE

Strong enough to deserve further attention.

HOLD

Interesting, but something important still needs checking.

REJECT

Not strong enough. Don't waste sales time on it.

What you receive

Research you can actually use.

Instead of hundreds of names, Patterson Global focuses on a smaller number of companies that have actually been looked into.

  1. 01

    The company

What it does, whether it fits and relevant business context.

  2. 02

    The people

The people who appear most relevant to the opportunity.

  3. 03

    The reason

Why the company came onto the radar in the first place.

  4. 04

    The evidence

Sources and supporting information behind the research.

  5. 05

    The risks

Reasons the opportunity may be weaker than it first appears.

  6. 06

    The judgement

    Pursue, hold or reject.

A smaller list, with the thinking behind it.

Fit. People. Reason. Evidence. Risk. Judgement.

The process

How it works

Four steps from brief to focused research

  1. 01

Tell me what a valuable customer looks like

The type of company, geography and anything that would make an opportunity particularly valuable or unsuitable.

  2. 02

    I research the market

Potential companies are checked for fit, relevant people, recent changes and reasons they may deserve attention.

  3. 03

    Weak opportunities get removed

Obvious poor fits and weak opportunities do not make the final cut simply to increase the number of names delivered.

  4. 04

    You get the strongest opportunities

The final research shows what was found, why it matters, what remains uncertain and where I think your sales time is best spent.

The principle

The idea is simple.

Most businesses don't have unlimited time to investigate every company they could approach.

I'd rather give you a handful of companies I've actually looked into than dump hundreds of names into a spreadsheet and call them leads.

The research is there to answer one question:

Who deserves a closer look?
